Addu City Council has urged residents to restrict travel on the main Link Road to essential trips only as persistent torrential rains leave key transportation routes severely flooded and hazardous.

MALÉ: Addu City Council has issued a public safety advisory restricting travel on the island chain’s primary Link Road to essential trips only, following severe weather conditions that left major roadways submerged.
The southern atolls have faced heavy rainfall, with meteorological records registering over 100 millimeters of rain in Addu yesterday.
To drain the accumulated floodwaters across multiple neighborhoods, local emergency crews laid discharge pipes across several road sections. Council authorities warned that surface flooding and operational pumping equipment have made driving conditions on the Link Road dangerous. Officials instructed motorists to reduce vehicle speeds and exercise extreme caution when navigating through waterlogged areas.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) reported that heavy rains caused water ingress in more than 70 households across the Maradhoo and Feydhoo districts. Several families were relocated to temporary shelters after their homes became temporarily uninhabitable.
Emergency response teams, local council staff, and defense forces are currently operating water pumps across affected districts to clear flooded streets.
