HULHUMALE’: The Maldives has held its first demonstration of a manned electric flying vehicle, with a Chinese-made aircraft taking to the skies over the Channel area of Hulhumale’ Phase 1 on Friday evening.

The demonstration featured the “Dream ST”, a single-seat electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft developed by Chinese company CoolFly.

The Ministry of Transport said the demonstration programme is scheduled to continue on Saturday, with further sessions planned for 8:45 a.m. and the evening.

The aircraft uses electric power to take off and land vertically, similar to a helicopter, without requiring a conventional runway.

A new direction for air mobility

Electric vertical take-off and landing vehicles are an emerging form of aviation technology designed to provide shorter and potentially more flexible journeys.

Unlike conventional aircraft, eVTOL vehicles use electric-powered rotors to lift off and land vertically. The technology is also being developed with the aim of reducing noise and environmental impact.

The demonstration marks an introduction of this technology to the Maldives, a country where geographical challenges make transport between islands an important issue.

Such aircraft could potentially offer new options for emergency medical transport and short-distance travel in the future.

However, the practical use of the technology in the Maldives would depend on safety approvals, regulatory arrangements, infrastructure and operational feasibility.
