SH. LHAIMAGU: A waterspout that struck Sh. Lhaimagu today caused significant damage to several houses and warehouses, while one person sustained injuries after being hit by a piece of flying roofing material.
According to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), around four houses in the island sustained damage to their roofs, along with several warehouses.
The authority said the injured person was struck on the head by a piece of tin roofing carried by the strong winds. The individual sustained a head injury and received medical treatment.
The NDMA is currently working with the Lhaimagu Island Council to assess the full extent of the damage caused by the incident.
The incident comes as the Southwest Monsoon continues to strengthen across the Maldives, with the national meteorological service forecasting widespread rain and thunderstorms across much of the country through Wednesday.
Some islands are expected to experience heavy rainfall, with periods of intense showers and thunderstorms.
The Meteorological Service has urged the public to remain cautious and pay close attention to weather updates, warning that rough sea conditions are also expected.
The advisory also calls on seafarers and those planning sea journeys to take extra precautions during the unsettled weather.
