Purpose of This Policy
This Editorial Policy outlines how R24 determines what to report, how stories are developed, and how editorial decisions are made. While our Code of Ethics defines our professional standards, this policy explains the structure, priorities, and decision-making processes that guide our newsroom.
R24 operates as an independent newsroom under First Lead Media Group, committed to public-interest journalism within the legal and constitutional framework of the Maldives.
Editorial Decision-Making Structure
Editorial authority rests with the Editor-in-Chief and designated senior editors. Story selection, framing, headlines, and publication timing are determined solely by the editorial team.
No political office-holder, advertiser, sponsor, shareholder, or external stakeholder has the authority to influence editorial content. Business operations and newsroom functions are structurally separated to prevent commercial considerations from shaping news coverage.
In cases involving sensitive national matters, legal implications, or public safety concerns, editorial consultation may include legal review, but final decisions remain with the newsroom.
How We Select Stories
R24 prioritises stories based on public relevance, accountability, and societal impact. News value is determined by factors such as:
We do not prioritise stories solely for controversy, emotional appeal, or digital traffic performance. Audience metrics inform distribution strategy not editorial substance.
Approach to Political Coverage
R24 provides coverage of political developments without alignment to parties or candidates. Election reporting, parliamentary coverage, and executive actions are reported with scrutiny and neutrality.
We do not endorse candidates or political movements. During election periods, additional editorial safeguards are applied to ensure fairness in airtime, representation, and headline framing.
Corrections and Editorial Review
All published content is subject to post-publication review. When factual errors are identified, corrections are issued clearly and without delay. Significant corrections are acknowledged transparently.
Editorial reviews may also result in updates to headlines, clarifications of context, or additional reporting when new information emerges.
Handling Complaints and External Pressure
R24 acknowledges that journalism may attract criticism, political reaction, or public debate. Complaints regarding accuracy or fairness are formally reviewed by the editorial team.
External pressure whether political, commercial, or social does not determine editorial outcomes. Decisions to amend, remove, or update content are based solely on factual accuracy, legal compliance, and editorial standards.
Opinion, Analysis, and News Separation
R24 maintains a clear distinction between factual reporting and opinion-based content. News articles present verified information. Opinion pieces, columns, and analysis are clearly labeled and reflect the views of the author, not the institutional position of R24.
Editorial commentary representing the institutional voice of R24 will be explicitly identified as such.
Digital Publishing and Headline Standards
Headlines and social media captions are written to accurately reflect the content of the story. We avoid misleading framing, exaggeration, or distortion designed purely to generate engagement.
Images, graphics, and multimedia are selected based on relevance and responsibility, particularly in cases involving sensitive subjects.
Use of Technology in Editorial Operations
Technology, including artificial intelligence tools, may assist in research, data processing, and newsroom workflow. However, all editorial decisions, story approvals, and ethical judgments are made by human editors.
No automated system independently publishes news content without human oversight.
Commitment to Editorial Responsibility
R24 recognises that journalism carries influence and consequence. Our editorial approach balances press freedom with responsibility, transparency with restraint, and scrutiny with fairness.
We remain committed to informing the public with integrity, strengthening institutional accountability, and contributing to responsible democratic discourse in the Maldives and beyond.
