Argentina captain Lionel Messi has become the all-time leading goalscorer in FIFA World Cup history, surpassing former Germany striker Miroslav Klose during the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026.
Messi entered the tournament level with Klose’s long-standing record before moving clear with a remarkable start to the competition. The Argentine star scored his first-ever World Cup hat-trick in his country’s opening group-stage victory over Algeria, followed by two goals against Austria and another in Argentina’s final group match against Jordan.
The achievement places Messi at the top of the tournament’s all-time scoring chart, overtaking Klose, who had held the record since the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
Meanwhile, France forward Kylian Mbappé has drawn level with Klose after scoring consecutive braces against Senegal and Iraq, taking his World Cup tally to 16 goals. Brazil legend Ronaldo remains one goal behind in fourth place.
